Spin the Wheel: Randomize your next Fantasy Character

Creating a compelling fantasy character can be a daunting task—so if you are feeling a bit froggy – why not leave it up to a little bit of fate? Whether you’re a writer crafting your next protagonist, a roleplayer looking for a unique character, or a game master designing NPCs, randomization can be a fantastic way to break out of creative ruts.

That’s where these simple fantasy character randomizer wheels come in! With just a click and a spin, you can generate a completely unique character, from race to class and to the finer details like physical traits and origins. Are you ready to embrace the unknown? If so, let’s dive in!

How to Use the Character Randomizer

  1. Spin the wheels linked below.
  2. If you land on a race that has many variants (ex: Elf or beast kin) , come back to the list and open up the next wheel to further determine your character’s details.
  3. Bring your character to life. (I have some sample prompts you can use to flesh out your character down below.)

The Wheels of Fate

These lists are designed based on Dungeons & Dragons classes and races, but with a fun twist! If you see the letters “HB” next to a race, that stands for homebrew—custom races with unique lore and traits. You can check out the detailed descriptions on this wiki right here – to learn more about these homebrew options and how they differ from the official ones. Just search for the race you ended up with in the search bar on the Wiki.

If there are any races or variants you’d like to see included in the wheels (for example, adding options like Deer or Alligator), please let me know in the comments down below. Your feedback is welcome and might even appear in future updates!

Below are the detailed descriptions for each wheel generator that will appear later in this post:

  • Class:
This wheel determines your character’s profession or calling. Are they destined to be a noble paladin, a cunning rogue with hidden depths, or perhaps something entirely unexpected like a Wizard or an Alchemist? Let the spin decide whether they wield sword and shield, or magic and mystery, setting the tone for their adventures ahead.
  • Race:
The race wheel forms the very foundation of your character’s identity. Will your character be human, elf, dwarf, or something far more exotic? With options ranging from traditional races to imaginative homebrew creations, this wheel lays the groundwork for your character’s cultural background, inherent abilities, and even how they might interact with the world around them.
  • Beast Kin List:
If your character possesses animalistic traits, this wheel will decide their lineage. Whether they exhibit the noble grace of a wolf, the fierce cunning of a panther, or other wild characteristics, this option adds a primal layer to their identity. Embrace the wild side of your character as you explore the untamed influences of their beast kin heritage.
  • Aasimar Type:
For those characters blessed with celestial heritage, the Aasimar Type wheel guides you in exploring their divine nature. Does your character radiate pure, inspiring light, or do they harbor a more conflicted spirit, caught between mortal struggles and celestial expectations? This choice highlights the unique interplay between their otherworldly gift and their human journey.
  • Aasimar Physical Description:
Building on their celestial roots, this wheel helps determine how divine ancestry manifests in your character’s appearance. From glowing eyes and luminous skin to subtle, ethereal markings, this generator adds a visual dimension that makes the celestial influence unmistakably apparent. Let your character’s look be as striking and unique as their backstory.
  • Dryad Tree List:
If you’re crafting a Dryad, nature is both your character’s home and their identity. This wheel decides which tree your Dryad is bound to—a choice that can reflect their personality, strengths, and even vulnerabilities. Whether it’s a towering oak or a delicate willow, the tree connection deepens the bond between your character and the magical essence of the forest.
  • Elf Type:
Elves come in many forms, and this wheel emphasizes that delightful diversity. Spin to determine if your character is a high elf with refined elegance, a wood elf with a rugged, natural charm, or perhaps one of the rarer, more enigmatic variants. Each type brings its own cultural nuances and abilities to enrich your character’s story.
  • Genasi Type:
For characters infused with elemental blood, the Genasi Type wheel decides which element is their dominant force. Whether it’s the fiery spirit of flame, the fluid grace of water, the steadfast strength of earth, or the free-spirited nature of air, this choice will shape not only their magical abilities but also their temperament and interactions with the environment.
  • Tiefling Heritage:
For those with infernal lineage, the Tiefling Heritage wheel reveals the darker side of their ancestry. This option might highlight a deep connection to infernal realms, bestowing unique powers, a mysterious aura, or internal conflicts born from their diabolical roots. Embrace the complexity of a character whose heritage is as much a burden as it is a gift.

Each spin of these wheels is designed to add unexpected twists to your character creation process, encouraging you to explore new narrative possibilities. Let these generators inspire you to craft characters that are as complex and memorable as the worlds they inhabit.

Bringing Your Character to Life

Now that you’ve spun the wheels and received your results, it’s time to transform those elements into a fully realized character. This is where your creativity takes over—using your unique insights to craft a persona that’s rich, engaging, and ready to leap into your story. Here are some prompts to help deepen your character’s development:

  • How do their background and abilities shape their personality?
Consider the origins of your character. Did a turbulent past or a formative event influence their beliefs and behaviors? Perhaps their unique abilities come with a cost or a legacy that has molded their outlook on life. Use these reflections to build a personality that is as nuanced as it is compelling, whether they are quietly resilient or boldly defiant.
  • Where do they fit into the world?
Think about your character’s place in the grand tapestry of your story’s universe. Are they an outcast struggling to belong, a noble with responsibilities and high expectations, or a wandering mercenary driven by personal ambition or survival? Their societal role can inform their relationships, conflicts, and the types of challenges they will face along their journey.
  • What are their strengths, weaknesses, and goals?
Every dynamic character is a blend of abilities and flaws. What talents set your character apart, and what vulnerabilities make them relatable? Identifying their strengths can help you design exciting challenges for them to overcome, while understanding their weaknesses will add depth and conflict. Additionally, define what drives them—whether it’s a personal quest for redemption, a desire to change the world, or something more intimate. These goals will serve as the backbone of their narrative arc.

Let these wheels be your guide, but remember, the true magic happens when you allow yourself the freedom to tweak, combine, or even completely reinvent elements as you see fit. Often, the best stories begin with a random spark of inspiration—a chance combination that unexpectedly blossoms into a compelling narrative.

So, who did you create? I’d love to hear about the character that emerged from your creative journey. Share your results, insights, and any unexpected twists in the comments below. Your unique perspective might just spark the inspiration someone else needs!

Happy creating and storytelling!

Much love,
Saki
