— Astrology made simple—for storytellers and daydreamers alike.
While coming up with a character recently, I decided to use astrology to help shape their personality. I wanted dive deeper than just saying “they’re a Leo” or “they’re shy” to just struggling to piece together a decent personality that didn’t just sound like my last character. —I also wanted to challenge myself to create a character outside of my comfort zone. After going online and generating a birth chart from Astro-charts, or whatever natal chart calculator you find online. Follow the sites instructions, and this will require some effort on your part but I believe the effort will be worth it.
I’m still learning myself, so this is a beginner-friendly method that doesn’t require deep knowledge of every planet or house. Just by focusing on these three placements, I was able to build a strong foundation for how my character sees the world (Ascendant), how they understand their values and identity (Sun), and how they process emotions and communicate (Moon).
In this example, the Sun is in Virgo in the 2nd house, and the Moon is in Libra in the 3rd house, but keep in mind that house placements will vary depending on the full chart. If you’re comfortable, you can experiment with combining signs and houses to add even more detail.
But if that still feels too intimidating, no worries—you can absolutely just use the zodiac signs for each placement. That alone gives you a powerful starting point for character personality and emotional nuance.
FYI… If you are doing this on your own you will have to clean up the chart yourself just go to the settings menu on the respective site you’ve chosen and clear out all the aspects and change the house system from the default to whole house signs. Once that is done look for the three highlighted symbols on the example chart. Doing this will make it feel less overwhelming with out all the lines on the chart… Trust me.

Below, I’m sharing the exact breakdown I used, based off the chart above.
—Astro Breakdown—
Ascendant (1st House) – Leo
Leo risings tend to be bold, confident, charismatic. They also have a flair for the dramatics– their effortless confidence tends to draw people to them even when they aren’t trying. Leo risings often enjoy being the center of attention and carry themselves with a sense of humor and pride making them easy to get along with and can make friends with just about anyone. Words like charming, radiant and easy to talk to, and confident are often used when meeting a Leo Ascendant for the first time.
These individuals have a strong sense of self and are not afraid to dress in a way that is true to them; regardless of outside opinion. If this individual somehow found themself in a leadership position they would easily rise to the occasion as if the role was meant for them.
However, if they’re not mindful of their behavior, they can lean into arrogance, becoming overly self-centered or overly reliant on validation from others. Their desire to be seen can sometimes eclipse the needs and feelings of those around them..
2nd House (Sun) – Virgo
With your Sun in Virgo and placed in the 2nd house, your identity is deeply connected to values, security, and self-worth. Virgos are known for being detail-oriented, grounded, and analytical. While Leo rising might crave the spotlight, your Virgo Sun prefers working behind the scenes, doing the important work no one else notices. This inner modesty can create an interesting balance between how others see you (Leo) and how you see yourself (Virgo).
The 2nd house brings a strong focus on stability—especially financial. But this isn’t about hoarding wealth or flaunting what you have. Instead, you seek the peace of mind that comes from knowing your needs are met. You understand that real value doesn’t come from material things but from how you carry yourself, your integrity, and your consistent effort.
People with this placement are often the go-to for advice on practical matters—especially money or organization. That said, Virgos can be perfectionists. If things go wrong, they may become overly critical of themselves or others. It’s important to remember that not every detail has to be perfect—and that allowing time for rest, play, and imperfection is part of the balance.
3rd house (moon) – Libra
Communication is key for someone with their Moon in Libra in the 3rd house. You process your emotions through conversation and are deeply affected by the quality of your interactions. You strive for fair, honest dialogue, and when communication breaks down, it can feel like your emotional center is unraveling. Frustration and emotional imbalance often follow when you’re unable to express what you feel.
Despite this, you make an effort to understand other perspectives, even when you’re emotionally charged. You want everyone to feel seen and heard, which makes you a thoughtful communicator—but also, at times, an indecisive one. What could’ve been a simple “yes” or “no” may turn into a “let me think about it” as you weigh every angle and possibility.
You’re also highly sensitive to your surroundings. If something feels “off” in the environment, you’ll be the first to notice—and you might even find yourself trying to fix the problem to bring back the harmony. After all a Libra moon would be the first to rearrange the whole room just to reset the energy. Your emotional well-being is deeply tied to balance, beauty, and harmony—inside and out.
Final Thoughts
One of the best things about using astrology for character creation is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all formula. Even if someone else uses the exact same Sun, Moon, and Rising placements, they might interpret them completely differently—and that’s the beauty of it. Your intuition, story goals, and the world you’re building all play a role in how these archetypes take shape.
This method is meant to inspire, not restrict. Whether you use full charts with house placements or just the zodiac signs themselves, let it be a tool to help you connect more deeply with your characters.
If you try this method, and are feeling a bit froggy. In the comments below let me know how it worked for you—or what kind of personalities you came up with using these placements!
Until time,
Keep exploring, keep writing, and don’t be afraid to let a little foolishness guide the way. Your next story might just begin with that one wild, unexpected step forward.
