Character Inspiration Through Tarot: Unveiling a Unique Journey

I was working on a character for a story when an idea popped into my noggin: why not create a new character—even though I already have way too many to keep track of (and even possibly use)? But what the heck? Let’s add another one to the list. With that new goal firmly in mind, I moved on faster than my roommates’ cats when dinner was ready.

Moving on, I grabbed a tarot deck from my collection and began shuffling it haphazardly. I kept shuffling until I had enough cards to form an interesting scenario for the character’s backstory. Four cards happened to be enough at that moment, as I was fully immersed in the story I was writing and envisioning how I wanted to shape this character—all while trying my hardest not to fall back into my usual “lone wolf with an edgy backstory” trope.

Note: The order of the cards doesn’t matter. Feel free to pick and choose the aspects that resonate most with the character you’re developing. Also I would encourage you to look at the imagery on the cards and see what kind of messages are popping out to you.

This is a great way to receive your own insights from the cards, making the character you’re developing even more unique and special.

The Cards & Their Meanings

The deck that I used for this reading is called Heavenly Bloom by Noa Ikeda. This is one of my favorite decks to use besides the original Rider-Waite tarot deck. As you explore the upcoming interpretations, take a moment to really absorb the imagery on each card. Notice the intricate details in the artwork—the symbols, colors, and figures that might resonate with you. Sometimes, the visuals reveal personal insights that add a rich layer of meaning to the messages. Trust your intuition and let the art speak to you.

Ace of Swords
Message:
You already possess the knowledge you need. The challenge lies in the journey to fully understand and integrate it into your life. Expect many ups and downs along the way. Ultimately, this journey will lead to fulfillment. This card also signals that now is a great time for your character to assess their surroundings carefully making informed decisions and uncovering deeper truths about their world.

Reversed 7 of Pentacles (Laurels)
Message:
Your character might have made some careless choices, not fully considering the long-term effects. But don’t worry—these failures aren’t the end of the world. This card is a gentle reminder to learn from past mistakes and evolve. It’s time to let go of negative emotions and stop lamenting over limited successes, paving the way for personal growth and a broader perspective.

6 of Swords
Message:
Tough times will pass, and there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Although lingering regret might cast a shadow, this card reassures that change is on the horizon. It encourages your character to maintain hope and steer their life toward a future that reflects their true desires.

Reversed 6 of Cups
Message:
Even after overcoming hardship, your character may need to let go of cynicism and an over-attachment to the past. Clinging to what once was can hinder progress. While reminiscing has its charm, don’t let it prevent moving forward. Embrace the present and the possibilities it holds for a brighter future.

Conclusion

I hope these tarot insights spark your imagination and help you craft a character that feels truly unique and compelling. Each card offers its own perspective and guidance—much like the twists and turns of any great story. Whether you’re writing a fantasy epic or a modern tale, consider these ideas as a way to enrich your character’s journey.
